Chapter team and captains
Audience: Captains and co-captains · Who can do this: depends on the action; see the table below Where in the app: the chapter's page → Manage chapter → Team (captains); the public chapter page and the dashboard (co-captains) Status: current. Last checked against: PR #401 and #403, plus Steven's captains-only last-captain rule (2026-09-29).
A chapter has one or more captains and any number of co-captains. Captains run the chapter; co-captains run its events.

A co-captain's own control is narrow on purpose: they run events, and they can always step down, but everything about the team and the chapter's public page belongs to a captain or an admin.
A captain can demote themselves as well as any other captain — there's no separate self-demote rule the way there is for removal. Adding someone to the team directly, without an invite, still needs an admin (in the CRM's Chapters view).
Publishing an event doesn't depend on any extra flag — any active captain or co-captain can publish an event in their own chapter, the same as a captain.
Chapters can't be deleted from the site. If a chapter should close, ask ClawCamp.
Removing or demoting the last captain
If removing or demoting a captain would leave the chapter with no captain, the site warns first: "This removes the last captain — the chapter will have no one managing it. Admins will be notified." (worded for a demote when you're demoting). Going ahead with either one emails ClawCamp's admins so the chapter isn't left untended. It counts captains only: the warning appears even if the chapter still has co-captains, and removing a co-captain never triggers it.
Disagreements
If you think someone was removed by mistake, or you disagree about who should be on the team, contact a ClawCamp admin. Admins can restore anyone, promote or demote a role, and settle the question.
Steps
Open the team editor (captains and admins)
On the chapter's public page (/chapters/<slug>), a captain or admin sees a Manage
chapter button near the chapter's social links. It shows only to an active captain of
that chapter, or an admin. Click it to open /manage-chapter/<id>, then find the Team
card below the chapter-info form.
A co-captain doesn't see Manage chapter at all — see "Step down as a co-captain" below for their one control.
Edit chapter info
The form above the Team card edits the chapter's name, location, description, links and cover image. Only a captain or admin can save changes here; a co-captain who reaches the URL directly sees "Not available."
Show, hide or reorder a captain on the public page
Each active captain's row in the Team card has two controls, for captains and admins only:
- A drag handle (⠿) on the left of the row — drag a row up or down to reorder it. The order you land on is the order captains render in on the public chapter page's Captains list. While a new order is saving, the list greys out briefly; if the save fails, the row order snaps back to what it was and an error message explains what happened.
- Hide / Show — toggle whether that person's row appears on the public chapter page at all. A hidden row is labeled "hidden on the public page" right in the Team card, so it's obvious it's still a live seat. Toggling doesn't touch their role or access.
Remove or restore a captain or co-captain
Active seats show a Remove captain status or Remove co-captain status button (the label matches the seat's role) with a confirmation dialog; seats you've removed move into a collapsed Removed / pending (n) — restore section, where a Restore button brings them back active.
- Your own row's Remove button always works — anyone can step down, captain or co-captain.
- Removing or restoring someone else's seat only shows a working button if you're a captain of the chapter, or an admin.
If the seat you're removing is the chapter's last captain, the confirmation dialog carries the extra last-captain warning (see above); confirming emails ClawCamp's admins.
Step down as a co-captain
A co-captain sees Remove co-captain status, with a confirmation dialog, in two places, since
they can't reach /manage-chapter:
- On the public chapter page, in place of the Manage chapter button.
- On their dashboard, in their chapter's row.
Invite a captain or co-captain
Click + Invite at the top of the Team card, choose Captain or Co-captain (an ⓘ next to each choice explains what that role can do, using the same rules as the table above; hover over it, tab to it or tap it to see the explanation, and tap or click anywhere else to close it), enter one or more email addresses (comma-separated), and send. Anyone already an active captain of the chapter is skipped. Inviting is captain/admin only; adding someone directly without an invite needs an admin (in the CRM's Chapters view).
Promote or demote a captain
Next to an active co-captain's row, a captain or admin sees a Promote button; on an active captain's row, in that same spot, the same viewer sees Demote. Either one takes effect immediately — no invite, and no confirmation beyond a "Promote/Demote so-and-so?" dialog that explains what the role change means. A captain can demote themselves, not only someone else. Demoting the chapter's only captain warns first and emails ClawCamp's admins, as described above.
View the full captain list on the public page
The public chapter page's Captains sidebar shows the first 5 by default. With more than 5, a View all (n) → link expands the rest in place — no page reload. Each row shows a small LinkedIn icon when that captain has a LinkedIn URL on file (their own, or their linked CRM contact's); rows with no LinkedIn on file show no icon, and the page never shows an email address.
